Just a quick post I meant to do awhile back. In the midst of NYFW hell I accompanied Izzy on a wacky adventure to Beacons Closet, Williamsburg. I've posted about this wondercave of amazing finds before (as in a quick mention in the outfit deets section). Most people I think are afraid of this place: a giant warehouse full of potential goodness. I really have never walked out of it without a new cheap thrill, some are fast burning and others are pretty fantastic big ass candles that will go for a long time. Case in point: the Marc Jacobs circa early 1990s sweater that Tavi would probably kill me for. It's so 90's grunge, Willow from Buffy. Now the key to really getting good stuff at Beacons is to quickly go through every single rack and just grab/put back, grab/pile onto arm, until you can no longer carry anything and/or you've gone through the whole place. When I'm looking I always go by three very basic instincts in this order:
- Touch: At some point in ones life you begin to develop a keen sense of what certain materials feel like, or you just like anything that is soft.
- Colour: It's much easier to tell what is going to be interesting by the colour or print on the garment (a reason I rarely leave with black clothing).
- Label: If the piece falls under either of the first two senses take a look at the label and see whether you got it right. I actually really like to get basics at Beacons too, like GAP/J.Crew/Uniqlo and flannels (seriously good flannelage to be had and always for cheaps (well NYC cheap...).
- You can also look for interesting shapes but generally that is pretty tough in the packed racks at Beacons or other thrift stores so stick to the first two senses.
When it came to this sweater, clearly a piece of fashion history given the vintage label (seriously would like to know what years MJ was using this label as this may be from one of his original grunge collections (sick street cred to own a sweater from the guy that practically invented grunge on the high end level)), I was actually drawn more to the way the sleeves had been knit, you probably can't tell in the pictures but it has three different knits in the sleeves, making them fit in a very different way to your usual sweater. In fact the whole jumper (which as Preetma also found out with her Rochas sweater) fits in a very interesting way, which of course I enjoy thoroughly but of course is impossible to photograph :(.
Oh hey Marc! How old are you?
[Vintage Marc Jacobs jumper, Banana Republic shirt, thrifted Gunnit knit skirt (ok so it's G-Unit but I only realized it once I had paid for it so I'm sticking with Gunnit), Lanvin pants, Dr Martens fleece boots]
On another note, I'd like to apologize for my lack of posts over the last month. Going through a lot of changes right now with school and life and really am still sorting stuff out, hence this rather weak post.

This is a very good guide, I cannot wait to do one of my own! The thrill of the hunt is always my favorite part. (picked up a Laundry by Shelli Segal 90s mini floral dress yesterday, SCORE!)
I hope you are doing well now and it will get better. I too know the stress of transitions and stress. Hang in there buddy!
So cute, a real find. I actually have a hard time with Beacons. After about twenty minutes my allergies start going off and I have to leave. I feel like Buffalo Exchange in Williamsburg is much less daunting to handle, and has yielded some incredible finds too. Next time we should go together!

Excellent find. Any other recommendations for vintage shopping in new york? I'm always in and out of the city so I never really get to explore much outside the major shopping districts.
I like the post, it's intresting to understand how people shop or shall I better say to ' edit ' their shopping. Interesting how your brain is working when on ' find mode ' in front of piles and piles of clothes either in sale or in a mega vintage shop. Don't worry about the posts, there are times where you can not find your muse. I have not done anything for two weeks. Maybe we need the ' summer is eventually here' kind of feeling. London is still cold, more sunny but cold. Still waiting for your ' skirt post'.

hope you can find out some more about the jumper, which collection ect. it's pretty different. is it faded or just the vibe?
ha you SO wear g-unit!
Joy - Nice Score Joy! Have you posted pics yet? Thanks for the positive energy :) deff needing it maybe it's time to kick this slump in the butt.
Tiffany - Beacons always is waaaay better then Buffalo, the quality of stuff at Beacons and brands you find are much more interesting then boring Buffalo... So in that case I may have judged it a little too soon what have you found their?
Harry - I'm making a googlemap guidey thing for my NY picks and will post it up when I feel I've perfected it, or reached a point where I'm just dieing to share what I've put up already. It's coming child fear not! I deff recommend looking at the vintage stores in Brooklyn and the East Village it's really the only places I go vintage shopping, at my price point.
Raj - Well the worst problem is I have a bunch of posts on the go and just maybe that's a problem in that I'm overwhelmed by them all and by the other stuff going on. It's still pretty chilly in NY right now too but that tends to make me work harder ironically. I'm worried about the summer to be honest, what am I without my layers :P? Oh and skirt post is coming along slowly but surely.
Mat - The best part about the sweater is it's mix of brown and orange which makes the faded effect from far away but adds depth closer up if you see in the label shot. Do not broadcast the g-unit!! :P
i miss my Brandon posts!
Hi Brandon,
I hope the mail finds you well? I am going soon to Germany, visiting family and friends. I need a break from London. I just would like you to have a look at the IOU- Project in regards to our on going discussion about consumerism and make the world a better place through fashion. The clothes are great and the idea behind them even better. I thnk we must support them! I posted already about them on my blog. If you like them as mucht as I do, maybe you can spread the word. I think this is important. Ok, here the links now

Amber - Don't worry I shall post again, I like writing too much!
Raj - Very interesting Links I checked them out and I love the idea but I don't feel there is enough information out yet to warrant a proper post. I'll keep checking in on it though. Thank you for sharing!
omG this is a GREAT find! that sweater looks so comfortable! i keep hearing about how great beacon's closet is...i guess i should go when i visit new york in a couple months!
that sweater makes me die and be born again inside. also the skirt is such a cool texture.
you comment was craaazy nice. as a blogger and a teenage girl, I feel like that never happens because it's extremely difficult to be unique. there will always be someone else out there thinking about cooler things, you know?
meagan - Get in touch when you do visit it'll be cool to meet! We can thrift together!
Meagan - 2 Meagan's commenting after each other never thought that would happen :P. I'm so in love with the sweater but it's too warm to wear it now :( very sad face. I'm one of only a few people I know who can't wait for winter and all the wool and layering!
I really meant what I said on your post, I generally only comment on people who have interesting things to share and you certainly do!
