In the interest of bettering oneself I decided to take in New York City culture by visiting Queens. No, this was not some kind of anthropological measure to see the true realities of living in a melting pot (Umm Astoria: definitely not just Greek), In fact they have museums in Queens! I had been told all about the Noguchi Museum by my friend Diane and that was one of the main reasons for the trip. Of course not going to the Socrates Sculpture Park was not an option. Noguchi Museum to come, in the mean time enjoy some of the cities most official hipster art:
A natural sculpture: The wind has quite literally sculpted this chunk of ice. PS taking photos with a dslr in a freezing windy place with fingerless gloves does lead to certain frost bite...

Anime Totem pole

Angry viking captain on a flag

Pink wolf. Reminds me of something from Superjail

Yes that is a smoking yellow moose...

Gigantic two dimensional bird house.

Tower of Babel?

Tower of multi-coloured sponges...

The result of filling a helicopter with hay and letting a bunny rabbit pilot it...
Crash and Burrow by Jonathan Durham from Socrates Sculpture Park on Vimeo.
And the resulting video piece

A hipster gypsy house made of empty Tide bottles. makes perfect sense.

I can really get into outdoor installations. The fallen helicopter and the sponge tower is awesome. The sponge tower reminds me of icecream scoops.
Thats what I thought it was to begin with. If it wasn't so cold I would have written down the names of the sculptors and could find out if the sponge guy specialised in piles of multi-coloured random objects...
