Making My First Shoe: Part 6 - Upper Update

Another quick update on ye olde shoe:

Hard at work!

Line up that lining!

GO!

You know what, I'm OK with that. It's certainly better then the prototype throat stitch!

Now for the tricky part: Sewing the yellow trim around the throat. I discovered I had to use double the amount of double stick tape as it kept sliding off! I ended up slightly ripping the trim in the process and barely managing to have a good stitch line but you know what? This is what happens when you don't teach a student sewing!

DSC05681
I guess you can't tell in this photograph bu there is a tear in that trim...

DSC05682
It was going good here until the machine jammed and a huge knot occurred in the bobbin...

DSC05683
THE most tricky part was the toe area part of the throat, which I think I managed to accomplish reasonably well (It should be re-did-it 4 times!)

Double stick taping the back seam cover

Et voila! and of course using black thread on white leather is never going to do much for hiding my crappy sewing skills :(. Worst of all, I couldn't unpick it and try again as the needle holes were simply to visible through the thin lambskin.

This is as far as I got in class, I still have to sew the back loop and then all the sewing is done for awhile. Unfortunately, due to lack of proper supervision I sewed the upper to the lining so now I'm going to have a lot of difficulty putting a counter in :(.

Hope you enjoyed this exclamation heavy post (apologies about that its finals week and getting a wee bit stressed). Also just want to point out the improved picture quality, many thanks to the good deal I got on a used Sony DSLR camera for B&H. I'll leave you with this McQueen clip as it sort of describes how I feel about the whole damn thing.

Abhorrently disgusted yet enraptured by the whole process.

OH and PS: This shoe has to be finished by December 17th...

Love the colour combo - I'm expecting that to show up in your first proper collection!

Thanks Susie! I was inspired by San Francisco's architecture and the Victorian houses http://feigned-perfection.blogspot.com/2010/11/making-my-first-shoe-part-2-design.html . Still have no idea how I'm going to make the heel, and its not even that complicated!

this is amazing. I'm not a big sewing person either so I understand the pain. i know it's gonna look amazing when it's finished.

Seriously, so much hard work, I find it a miracle that any shoes ever get made. Could never be a cobbler. Have that much more respect for them now.

On a related note, do you have some shoe glue lying around that I could borrow? The soles are coming off my Chanel boots and I want to fix them myself!

xx

This is truly art! I have a minor obsession with "making of" things and watching you do your thing is just spectacular. This is going to be an amazing shoe! I just know it!

btw, you've got a new follower in me!

Haha Thank you for the enthusiasm Mr Gratz! Definitely need it as its my final project for the semester and I'm not really getting the help I need with it. Just imagine that I had better sewing skills and more colours of thread other than black and then hopefully it will be a good shoe :/

Oh and Tiffany I think the glues I have are temporary but I'll check there is a huge pot of petronios shoemaking glue I have which might not be temporary. Send me some photos of the shoe and I'll see if I have the tools to do anything about it.

Susie stole my comment--love love the color combo. Can't wait until it's all finished! Also love those Versace sweaters--they look unreasonably cozy.

The Working Girl - Thanks so much! Those sweaters are insanely cosy. I feel like I'm in a snuggy or something, except its cashmere and its versace!
