I've known for a few weeks that my all time favourite designer, Issey Miyake, would be coming back to design a new line called 132 5. Until now I hadn't seen what it would look like but the images are out and the results are pretty phenomenal. 132 5 stands for one piece of fabric, a three dimensional shape, reduced to two and the five stands for the number of ways it can be worn.
The garments starts off in this flat shape

What is most startling perhaps is that the line really aims to be as sustainable as possible. Everything is made from recycled PET polyester, the same polyester that you find in those recyclable plastic bottles. A quick aside, Miyake has been creating polyester products for decades. His polyester is much more refined then those 70's disco shirts you'll find at Beacons Closet. Miyake never saw polyester as a way to create cheap mass-produced clothing. Instead he has seen it as a new material, to be experimented with and to find new ways to turn it into something quite fantastic.
Japanese computer scientist Jun Mitani created a program that could create 3D geometric forms from a piece of paper. The program was configured to work for textiles by the Miyake lab 21:21. Despite the recycled polyester material the clothing has been designed so that, as Miyake hopes " people will keep them a long time, and not replace them every two months." Which to Issey-san "is the essence of sustainability." Definitely looking forward to seeing the stuff in person at its NY launch next month.

Phenomenal indeed! But will he ever make these for men?
Brandon - you're becoming my source for all things Miyake! I'm excited to see this latest extraordinary creation in its loving and living splendor when it comes to NYC.
I love his freedom of thought!
I also love your writing - another of your many talents!
Izzy - You know what answer is going to come out of my mouth. I am positive I will find something of this new collection which would look really great on a guy (the right guy but it will).
Morag - I am so glad you found my blog! I'll let you know when the night is and we can go together! Maybe Issey-san himself will be there! Thank you so much for your compliments, I'm trying to be as free as possible with the writing as I find I can get very bogged down on minor details.
Very complex sounding explanation of the name, but wouldn't expect anything less from Issey. The concept is cool and the results are amazing. Can't believe it's sustainable too!
